Osborne Clarke has advised the CleanTech start-up SPiNE on its recently completed Pre-Seed financing round of EUR 1.5 million.

SPiNE, founded in February 2024 by three energy industry experts Dr Ron Melz, Dr Thomas Müller, and Dr Martin Stötzel, aims to enable secure, clean and affordable energy supply for all end-customers. The company focuses on the nationwide rollout of smart meters, i.e., connected electricity meters, so that this digitalisation of metering allows efficient control of charging infrastructure, heat pumps and battery storage systems. To ensure that smart meters remain cost-effective, flexible, and expandable at any time for end customers, SPiNE is developing a new “middleware” layer as an interface between the smart meter infrastructure and energy applications.

The start-up has now completed its first financing round amounting to EUR 1.5 million. The investors include a consortium consisting of Austria's VERBUND X Ventures, Bayern Kapital, Superangels, and Scrape Ventures. SPiNE will primarily use the funds from the financing to build the team and develop the technical product. Additionally, strong partners were secured in the round, who, as SPiNE states, share and promote the start-up's vision with industry expertise and their international market access.

The Osborne Clarke team that advised SPiNE, led by Fabian Mimberg and with Partner responsibility from Nicolas Gabrysch, consisted of Benedikt Hülsmann (all Corporate / VC), Sonja Riedemann, Nils Wiehmann and Konstantin Axnick (all Employment Law).
