The key measures of the AGEC law

LAW N°2020-105 OF 10 FEBRUARY 2020 ON THE FIGHT AGAINST WASTE AND THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY ("AGEC" LAW) - TIMELINE OF IMPLEMENTATION OF KEY MEASURES

2020

(Entry into force on 12th February 2020)

• Increase of the fine for non-compliance with food waste rules

2021

(Entry into force on 1st January 2021)

• New rules about bulk sales
• Ban on straws, plastic confetti, steak spikes, stirrers, takeaway cup lids, expanded polystyrene boxes and all oxo-degradable plastic items
• Reinforcement of the ban on single-use plastic bags
• Ban on commercial advertising placed on vehicles and distribution of unsolicited gifts in letterboxes
• Creation of a reparability index
• Creation of new obligations to provide information on software updates

(Entry into force on 1st April 2021)

• Ban on the green dot logo: entry into force suspended by the Conseil d’Etat

2022

(Entry into force on 1st January 2022)

• Obligation to provide information on the environmental qualities and characteristics of the product (durability, compostability, reparability, reusability, recyclability...)
• Limitation on the use of the terms "compostable", "biodegradable", "environmentally friendly" or equivalent terms)
• Obligation to display the Triman logo and the associated sorting information
• New rules on the availability of spare parts
• Modification of the rules on the legal guarantee of conformity
• Ban on the destruction of unsold non-food products for products subject to the extended producer responsibility principle and for hygiene and childcare products
• Ban on the marketing of tea and herbal tea bags made of non-biodegradable plastic
• Ban on displaying fruit and vegetables in plastic packaging for sale
• Ban on labels on fruit and vegetables
• Ban on press publications and advertisements in plastic packaging
• Ban on plastic toys offered free of charge as part of children's menus

2023

(Entry into force on 1st January 2023)

• Prohibition of printing of printed receipts, bank cards receipts and vouchers
• Obligation to use reusable dishes (plates, cups and other containers) and cutlery for meals and drinks consumed on the premises

(Entry into force on 31 December 2023)

• Ban on destruction of unsold non-food items for other products

 

2024

(Entry into force on 1st January 2024)

• Creation of a sustainability index

2025

• Target 100 % recycled plastic
• Reduce food waste by 50% from 2015 levels in food distribution and catering

 

2030

• Reduce the number of single-use bottles by 50%
• Reduce food waste by 50% from its 2015 level in the areas of consumption, production, processing and commercial catering

2040

• Target 0 single-use plastics
