Osborne Clarke Netherlands assisted MoonPay Europe B.V. in obtaining its crypto-asset service provider license under MiCAR. With MiCAR coming into force today, MoonPay is among the first to obtain its license!

MoonPay is a prominent global crypto payments company, simplifying access to the digital economy.

As one of the world’s largest crypto on- and off-ramps, MoonPay powers payments for over 24 million verified accounts and 500+ partners including crypto giants Uniswap, Trust Wallet, and Phantom, alongside iconic brands such as Mastercard, Gucci, and Adidas. MoonPay operates across 180+ countries and has processed over $7 billion in transactions since inception.

The Markets in Crypto-Asset Regulation (MiCAR) introduces a unified regulatory framework for the European crypto-asset market. A cornerstone of this framework is the requirement for crypto-asset service providers to obtain a license, which is passportable across the EEA. This new framework allows companies like MoonPay to deliver consistent services throughout the region, fostering growth and innovation.

Matt Sullivan, Deputy General Counsel, commented: “This license is a significant milestone for MoonPay as we continue to expand our services across Europe under the new MiCAR framework. Osborne Clarke’s experience and guidance was invaluable in navigating the regulatory complexities and achieving one of the first approvals of its kind.”

Osborne Clarke's Amsterdam-based Financial Regulatory team, led by Johannes de Jong and Anka Langedijk,  played a crucial role, with key contributions from  Juliet de Graaf, Jet Francke and Piet Lange.

The Osborne Clarke financial regulatory team is known as one of the busiest practices for license applications to Dutch financial regulators (AFM and DNB). They are particularly strong in the field of banks (CRR/CRD4), cryptocurrency (AMLD5/MiCAR), payments and e-money (PSD2/EMD2), investment firms/crowdfunding (MiFID2/ECSPR), and fund managers (AIFMD/UCITS).
