Venture capital and private equity in Belgium

Outlook for 2016

The most active sectors in the Belgian VC/PE scene are the tech, media and comms and life sciences and healthcare sectors. It is expected that this will continue in 2016. This year, we have seen start-ups turning much more often to crowdfunding, which is used not only to attract initial funding but also (and even more) as a marketing tool to attract larger investors.

FinTech is also clearly gaining momentum in Belgium, with FinTech-specific accelerators being set up. We expect the FinTech sector to further grow in 2016, especially with the presence of business angels with a professional background in the FinTech sector looking for investment opportunities.

Key deals in 2015

OC Brussels acted on the following VC/PE deals in 2015:

  • For one of the owners of Engagor, a Belgian tech, media and comms company active in social media management and monitoring, in relation to the sale of Engagor to Clarabridge.
  • For Takeda Ventures in relation to a EUR 3 million series A investment in Belgian biotech company Univercells.
  • For the Belgian biotech company Apitope in relation to its EUR 12 million series B funding.

We are currently working for start-up Licheez in relation to a crowdfunding project.
