The ASEAN Law Association was formed in 1979 by the legal communities of the various ASEAN countries to foster closer ties, better understanding and co-operation. The ALA brings together the various branches of the legal profession among ASEAN countries – judges, law academics, lawyers and government lawyers. Since its inception and inaugural meeting in Jakarta in 1979, the ALA has had 13 ALA General Assembly meetings. On 25 to 28 July 2018, Singapore hosted the 13th ALA General Assembly and ASEAN Law Conference. This year's conference theme is “The Power of ONE: Unlocking opportunities in ASEAN through Law”.

There is a renewed push within the ALA to provide an updated, extensive and authoritative compilation of the legal systems and business-related laws in ASEAN. As part of this, OC Queen Street’s Gerald Tan was invited to contribute to "The Law of Torts" and “The Law of Intellectual Property” segments of the Singapore "Business Law" chapter.
