Driverless cars - 46% would take a ride

According to our smart cities in Europe report, 58 per cent of business leaders think that intelligent transport systems are the smart cities component most likely to have a positive impact on citizen well-being.
One of the highest profile, and most controversial, intelligent transport options is the driverless car. With trials due to start in four UK cities this year, we decided to test the water by asking people whether they would travel in a driverless car if they were given the chance to do so today.
The survey, carried out by YouGov on behalf of Osborne Clarke, found that almost half of UK adults (46 per cent) would be willing to take a ride, while 39 per cent have yet to be convinced.
The fact that so many people would take a ride will be welcomed by the motor industry, which is investing millions in developing driverless car technology.
Total sample size for the YouGov survey was 2184 adults. Fieldwork was undertaken between 8th – 9th January 2015. The survey was carried out online. The figures have been weighted and are representative of all GB adults (aged 18+).
