Workplace surveillance technologies
A consultation will be undertaken on how workplace surveillance technologies are implemented in the workplace, including the role of trade unions and worker representatives (it is expected to include a duty to meaningfully consult with them).
Implementation Status (November 2024)
- Awaiting consultation.
- Will form part of the government's "longer term delivery".
- Action
Ensure any existing workplace surveillance technologies comply with current legal requirements and regulatory guidance from the Information Commissioner's Office.
- In detail
We are awaiting further details.
- Impact
Hybrid working and performance management (including the removal of the unfair dismissal qualifying period), increasing use of AI and taking measures to mitigate risks such as third party harassment or ungenuine sickness absence, is likely to see more employers looking (or perhaps inadvertently finding themselves adopting) surveillance tools in the workplace.
