The authors of the smart cities in Europe report Osborne Clarke point out that lack of funding and regulatory frameworks are the main obstacles in the development of smart cities. According to Simon Bswick, International CEO at Osborne Clarke, it’s also the fact the far too few European cities have created a global vision, and even less of a solid strategy when it comes to smart cities.
In Belgium’s case, Stefan Deswert, Partner at Osborne Clarke Brussels, is disappointed by the very defensive attitude of public authorities. “We witnessed this with the launch of car sharing service Uber in Brussels. On the other hand, there is a complete lack of strategy, both on a federal and regional level.”
