Hugo is a partner in our Energy team. He advises international and domestic clients on policy and legal issues relating to decarbonisation and the energy transition.
His particular expertise is the development of energy projects, including nuclear, renewables and emergent technologies (small nuclear, green hydrogen, smartgrids/microgrids and carbon capture and storage). He also regularly advises on trading, power purchase (PPA) and optimisation agreements for physical, virtual and sleeved offtake strategies.
Hugo co-heads our international Green Hydrogen team and is interested in all aspects of the net zero agenda. He recently authored Globe Law and Business's "Decarbonising Energy: The Pathway to Net Zero".
Hugo was previously deputy GC of EDF Energy's Generation business and was also company secretary and the head of legal in its Power division.
“Hugo has been our go to person on multiple energy projects – and consistently delivers! His easy-to-deal-with and pragmatic approach cuts through pages of complex agreements to the key commercials. Hugo, supported by the wider Osborne Clarke team as appropriate, remains a key partner helping Yu Group plc deliver various transformational deals in a period of rapid growth.”
Helping you succeed in tomorrow's world
After spending time working in the power sector, I was enthusiastic about returning to private practice in 2019 to support the energy transition and help promote the key enablers to net zero: a renewable-dominated power system, new advanced nuclear, a green hydrogen economy and successful "at scale" carbon capture and storage.
While I work primarily with generators, I am always looking to help "consumers" of power to explore and exploit the potential of clean energy on their decarbonisation journey: all the way from Corporate Power Purchase Agreements to full-blown grid-independent SmartGrids and MicroGrids.
In terms of deciding where to work, the choice of Osborne Clarke was an obvious one for me. Its culture is second to none, the quality of its lawyers is excellent, and I strongly believe that OC is the Energy Transition law firm.
Outside of work, the space in my life where "hobbies" once resided has been displaced by three boisterous children and a batty golden retriever.

Also advising on the tender and renegotiation of a number of Octopus's solar portfolio utility PPAs.
UK generators
Advising two UK solar/battery developers on the Corporate PPAs and associated optimisaiton arrangements for their three co-located solar and battery projects, using both AC and DC-coupled offtake options.
Yu Energy
Advising Yu Energy on its 5-year multi-million-pound gas and power structured trading arrangements with Shell Energy Europe, including associated security arrangements.
A Nuclear SMR developer
Advising a nuclear SMR developer on a bespoke private wire PPA to supply power to a hydrogen production facility (a first of its kind method of providing direct power to a UK manufactuer).
Lhyfe
Advising Lhyfe on the structuring of an offshore renewable-to-green hydrogen project, and associated regulatory grid connection / gas import considerations.
SNRG
Advising SNRG on the regulatory and commercial structuring of its first-of-a-kind SmartGrid projects, enabling generation, storage and demand to be optimised within new and retrofitted grid constrained commercial and residential developments. This included the acquision of an iDNO. Initial projects include Longbridge West (new build residential development); Hook Norton (mixed use development) and Greencore (commercial retrofit).
