Business Immigration & Brexit | a summary of what you need to know in Spain

Published on 9th Dec 2020

British citizens and their family members registered as residents in Spain before 1 January 2021 will be entitled to continue to live, work and study in Spain. To this end, British residents in Spain will have to apply for a "residence card for British citizens" before the end of this year 2020.

If legal residence starts after the transition period, on or after 1 January 2021, the rights of British citizens and their family members to live and work in Spain will be established by the agreement that regulates the future relationship between the EU and the UK or, in its absence, those established by the Spanish immigration regime. It means that if no agreement between the EU and the UK is reached, British nationals will be treated as non EU-citizens, who will be required to have a residence or work permit in order to live or work in Spain.
